Central students earn History Day honors

Two Central Junior High School students placed in the top 14 in the National History Day competition in College Park, Md.

Hillary Spratt and Maya Weil, who presented “The Fight For Control: The Creation of the Pill,” in the Junior Group Documentary category, also were recognized Thursday as Outstanding Junior Entry for Kansas.

Their teacher is Dari Hilbert.

Throughout the school year more than 1,200 students statewide worked, researched and tracked primary sources. Kansas students in grades six through twelve compete in junior and senior categories, divided by individuals and groups in performances, documentaries, papers and exhibits.

Scholarship hall plans to be heard next month

A proposed Kansas University scholarship hall in the 1300 block of Ohio Street will be discussed by the city’s Historic Resources Commission in a special meeting July 3.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. The issue was initially scheduled for Thursday night’s agenda, but city staff opted to postpone the discussion when they anticipated a busy meeting.

The commission must discuss the scholarship hall plans because the building falls within 500 feet of two structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Spooner Hall on campus and the Usher House, 1425 Tenn.

KU’s Campus Historic Preservation Board approved the plans June 6. If the hall plans are approved by the city, construction would begin later this year and be complete by fall 2005, KU officials said.
