Doubts remain about July Fourth parade

Members of the city’s Sesquicentennial Commission continue to struggle to drum up support for an Independence Day parade in downtown Lawrence.

Earlier this week just 10 entries had been received for the proposed 10 a.m. parade, which would march from Seventh and Vermont streets to South Park.

While Wednesday’s official deadline passed with a total 21 entries in hand, there’s still doubt about moving forward with the event.

Parade applicants — from the Lawrence Dazzlers dance group to state Rep. Paul Davis, D-Lawrence, and a mule-following army from the Pinckney Neighborhood Assn. — still could be out of luck unless more groups sign up to participate.

“It’s looking positive,” said Alicia Janesko, a parade organizer. “We want this to happen.”
