City contributes to fireworks show budget

A lack of cash won’t completely douse Lawrence’s annual July 4 fireworks show along the Kansas River, thanks to a contribution from the city.

But thus far, the show’s budget remains about half of what it was last year.

Mayor David Dunfield says the city will spend $4,000 to ensure that the Lawrence Jaycees’ annual Fireworks Extravaganza will go on as planned.

The show has been conducted for at least 35 years near Lawrence’s downtown. The staging area is on the north bank of the Kansas River and best viewing is available in Burcham Park on the south side of the river.

City officials say the show is particularly important to the community this year because this is the first year of a ban on personal use of fireworks within the city limits.

The budget for this year’s show, thus far, includes $2,500 from the Jaycees plus the $4,000 from the city.

Last year, the Jaycees spent about $12,000 on the show, which lasted about 40 minutes. The city also contributed about $4,000 to last year’s show.
