Payless ShoeSource to cut jobs in Topeka

Less than a month after reporting sharply lower earnings, Payless ShoeSource confirmed that it would lay off 100 employees at its Topeka distribution center.

The Topeka-based company said Monday that the layoffs would be temporary but did not indicate when the workers might be recalled. The layoffs are expected to begin June 28.

The footwear retailer reported in mid-May that its earnings were down 40 percent from a year ago and same-store sales were off 6.2 percent. The company blamed the slow sales on less-than-expected demand for sandals and athletic shoes.

The layoffs will be based on seniority, Payless said. The distribution center employs about 900 people. The company’s corporate offices also are in Topeka, but no layoffs were announced for that location.

Payless stock closed down 5 cents Tuesday to close at $15 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
