Operation Wildlife will have a 5K benefit run at 7:30 a.m. June 22 at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee, at shelter house No. 8. The organization needs about 50 volunteers as course monitors, to hand out water bottles and to cheer on the runners. Course monitor responsibilities include cleaning areas of the trail after runners pass and assisting runners who need help. Volunteers should arrive by 6:30 a.m. to set up and will stay a little after the run ends around 10 a.m. to help clean.

To participate as a runner in the event, download an application from www.owl-online.org from the community news page. The cost is $15 per runner before June 14 and $18 after. Money raised will be used to help the organization care for and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

Last week’s results

The Alzheimer’s Assn., Heart of America Chapter, received three calls from people wanting to help with Memories in the Making, an art program to teach people with Alzheimer’s disease how to express themselves through art. Louise Coates said two of those volunteers had already committed and she did not need any more help at this time.
