Padres sign Beck

San Diego — Rod Beck signed with the San Diego Padres Monday to help shore up their dreadful bullpen, returning to the big leagues after spending two months in the minors. Beck went 1-1 with a 0.59 ERA in 21 appearances for the Chicago Cubs’ Triple-A Iowa affiliate.

Gooden to coach

Tampa, Fla. — Dwight Gooden is ready to try coaching. Gooden, currently a New York Yankees special adviser, will be the pitching coach this summer for the team’s rookie ball club in the Gulf Coast League.
