Eugene Charles May

? Services for the Rev. Eugene Charles May, 73, Phoenix, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Barnett’s Meriden Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Grantville Cemetery.

The Rev. May died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at his home after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 5, 1929, in Oskaloosa, the son of Eugene Curtis and Lola Mae (Barnes) May. He moved from Ozawkie to Phoenix six years ago.

The Rev. May was a pastor at Missionary Baptist Church for 40 years and at Maranatha Missionary Baptist Church at the time of his death. He also was a pastor at First Missionary Baptist Church in Perry for four years and Missionary Baptist churches in Sedalia, Mo.; Andrews, Texas; Prescott, Ark.; Houston; Kansas City, Mo.; Elk City, Okla.; and Leavenworth. He taught classes at West Texas Baptist Seminary in Midland, Texas, while in Andrews.

He married Violet Marie Anderson on April 1, 1947, in Valley Falls. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include four sons, Michael Eugene, Houston, Samuel Lynn and Charles Wayne, both of Phoenix, and Mark Alan, Olathe; two daughters, Susan Kay Getchell and Julie Ann Mitchell, both of Phoenix; a brother, Ralph, Conroe, Texas; two sisters, Shirley Polzin and Yvonne Milligan, both of Houston; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Two grandsons died earlier.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
