Wyandotte casino trial could occur this year

? Kansas officials have returned to federal court to try to block a plan by the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma to open a casino in Kansas City, Kan.

A lawsuit filed by the state is the latest twist in its seven-year legal battle over the casino, proposed for a former Masonic building adjacent to a tribal cemetery and across the street from City Hall.

The attorney general’s office filed the litigation July 11, and spokesman Chad Bettes said Friday that a trial was possible later this year.

The lawsuit concerns how the tribe used $100,000 in federal funds it obtained in 1984 as compensation for Ohio land the tribe ceded during the 19th century. The tribe contends it used the money to buy the Masonic building in 1996.

Based on that premise, the U.S. Interior Department ruled last month that the building was placed in trust and became eligible for a casino.
