Legends settle for second

Lawrence drops two more games against champion Mad Dawgs

? A long day in soaring temperatures ended with a runner-up finish for the Lawrence Legends at the Kansas North State Softball Tournament.

The Legends went 1-2 Sunday, with temperatures flirting near the 100-degree mark at the Johnson County Girls Athletic Assn. Complex. Both of the losses were to the Kansas Best Mad Dawgs (36-2), who were crowned state champs after an undefeated tournament and a 2-0 victory in the championship game.

Had the Legends won the title game, they still would have had to beat the Mad Dawgs one more time to win the tourney, an exhausting thought on such a steamy day.

“It was definitely hard to play in 100-degree temperatures,” Lawrence coach Kristina Johnson said. “But I think they handled it pretty well.”

In the tournament finale, the Mad Dawgs scored both runs on an opposite-field home run by catcher Ashley Weiss in the first inning — all too reminiscent of the matchup between the two teams Friday, when Weiss crushed two home runs in an 8-0 victory.

Meanwhile, the Legends could manage just three singles and had no runners advance past second base. Despite having baserunners in every inning, the Legends never threatened the Chase County-based Mad Dawgs.

“We tried hard,” Johnson said, “but it seemed like we couldn’t string together hits at the same time.”

Leigh Anna Thompson pitched a solid complete game — after the first-inning homer — and was 1-for-2 at the plate with a single.

The Mad Dawgs also beat the Legends, 4-3, earlier Sunday, knocking Lawrence into the consolation bracket.

The Legends were able to recover and beat the Pittsburg Stealers, 11-0, in a game that was called after just two innings because a Stealers player hurt her neck while sliding into third base.

The Legends finished 4-3 in the tournament, but more importantly, in second place in the “B” division — not too shabby, according to Johnson.

“They played really hard today, and the whole weekend,” Johnson said. “I’m happy with that.”
