LHS Girls Basketball Camp: Lawrence High girls basketball camp will be all next week. High schoolers will go from 8-11 a.m., junior highs from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and fourth through sixth graders from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Scholarships are available. For information, call Kristin Mallory at 842-3342.

  • Triple Track Medalists: Robert Dunn, Alexa Harmon-Thomas and Scott Penny of the Lawrence Track Club all earned one first place and two seconds at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics last weekend at Memorial Stadium. Other LTC gold medalists were Amanda Davidson and Chris Smith. Also earning second places were Sylvester Birdsong, Kameron Demby and Boomer Mays. Thirds were to Bridgette Berry, Paul Minor and Demby.

  • Softball Tryouts: Tryouts for the Chili Peppers, a U-12 girls softball team, will be at 9 a.m. on Aug. 2 at the Lake Shawnee complex red field. League games will be at Lake Shawnee. Call 841-0428.

  • Tri-Fitness Standouts: Lawrence’s Lovena Tuley and Lorrie Belcher finished third and 21st respectively in the World Women Tri-Fitness championships in Las Vegas. More than 85 women competed in a range of events that included obstacle course, fitness skills, fitness routine and a grace and physique round.

  • Phenix U-16 Advances: Lawrence Phenix U-16 softball will play in the ASA Class A national tournament next week in Decatur, Ill. The Phenix (31-9) qualified by winning a qualifier in Basehor. Team members are Rachel Amyx, Amy Bullerman, Lacey Burnett, Kelsey Epperson, Chelsea Flowers, Alissa Hamilton, Amanda Hughes, Whitney Juneau, Kayla Moyer, Jacqueline Pyle and Shannon Worley. Coaches are Wiley Burnett, Eric Epperson and Ted Juneau.

  • Rugby Practices: Practices for the Kansas Jayhawks Rugby Football Club are underway. The Club fields both men’s and women’s teams. For information, call (785) 969-5204 or (785) 862-8820.

  • Rebels Take Third: Lawrence Rebels U-11 baseball team earned third place at a tournament in Omaha, Neb. Team members are Drew Branstrom, Seth Dirks-Ham, Hayden Emerson, Antonio Garcis, Nick Hassig, Landon Moseley, Adam Petz, Brad Phillips, Koty Russell, Harrison Scheib and Justin Vander Tuig. Coaches are Rod Sharp, Paul Vander Tuig and Dave Scheib.
  • SMU Taps Hemphill: Jonathan Hemphill, an SMU swimmer from Lawrence, has earned the Dallas school’s outstanding scholastic senior athlete award. Hemphill compiled a 3.96 grade point average in computer engineering. In the pool, Hemphill swam distance.

  • Five-Tool Baseball: Sessions for the fall Five-Tool Baseball School are scheduled on Saturdays in late August and throughout September. Youths is grades 3 to 12 are eligible. For information, call Mike Hill at 766-4916.

  • Wedd Hole-in-One: Lawrence High football coach Dirk Wedd used a seven-wood to ace the par-three, 171-yard No. 7 hole at Alvamar’s public course Wednesday. Witnesses were Jack Schreiner, Darrin Wagner, Ken Matous and John Morris.

  • Firebird cheer: Free State High’s varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads both won top team awards in their divisions at the National Cheer Assn. camp in Baldwin, which ended Wednesday. Both squads received bids to nationals, the stunt smart award, the spirit stick and multiple blue ribbons. Cambry McNabb and Lacey Baxter also were named All-Americans. Other nominated as All-Americans include: Kim Baker, Candice Cesare, Erin Berner, Laurent Lewis, Amanda Cromer, Kamesha Moore, Liz Brandt, Abbey Perkins, Heather Leibach, Madeline Heck, Brittany Maynard, Sam Poholsky and Tiffany Sloan.

  • Crosstown Unity Run: The Crosstown Unity Run to benefit Free State and Lawrence high school track and cross country programs will be Aug. 9. There will be a 10K race, a two-person, tag-team 10K and a 1-mile walk/run. The entry fee is $15 before July 30, and $18 after that date.
