Mystics halt skid

? Chamique Holdsclaw had 24 points and 13 rebounds as Washington snapped an 11-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 77-64 win over New York.

Holdsclaw got her seventh double-double of the season and even dished out five assists in the Mystics’ first win since beating San Antonio June 10.

Annie Burgess added 15 points and Murriel Page had 11 for Washington (3-14), which tied a franchise record and dropped to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with the 11-game skid.

Monarchs 66, Rockers 57

Cleveland — Tangela Smith scored 22 points and Ticha Penicheiro had a season-high 15 assists to lead Sacramento over he Cleveland. Penny Taylor scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Rockers (8-9). Kara Lawson added 14 points for the Monarchs (9-11).

Storm 69, Comets 55

Seattle — The Seattle Storm knew they had a great opportunity, with Houston missing two of its All-Stars and second place in the Western Conference within Seattle’s grasp. Sue Bird made sure her team took advantage with 13 points, 10 assists and a career-high eight rebounds as the Storm beat Houston.

The Storm leapfrogged Houston, taking a half-game lead and snapping the Comets’ four-game winning streak.

Seattle (10-7) used a 13-2 run to take a 31-21 lead at halftime. Kamila Vodichkova’s 12 first-half points paced the Storm, who had lost nine of 10 meetings against Houston — the four-time WNBA champions.

Lauren Jackson and Vodichkova had 18 points apiece for the Storm, and Bird’s double-double was her sixth of the season.

Cynthia Cooper and Tina Thompson, two of Houston’s three All-Stars, missed Tuesday’s game.
