Two gored in bull run

Spanish festival continues today

? Bulls gored two people and trampled at least four others in Saturday’s San Fermin bull run, but the large number of injuries expected during the crowded run did not happen.

One of those gored — identified as 31-year-old David Biggins from Sussex, England — was injured in the right leg and hit on the head when a bull caught up with him and flipped him high into the air.

Landing on the cobblestones, Biggins lay still, shielding his head with his hand as the rest of the bulls and steers stampeded by without trampling him. He did not appear seriously hurt and later at the hospital received stitches in his upper leg and head, news reports said.

At least five other people were taken to Pamplona’s main hospitals, one who was gored and four others who were trampled by bulls or fellow runners, according to news reports. None of the injuries was serious.

The six 1,200-pound bulls ran through Pamplona’s old town, as runners — their ranks swelled during the weekend — taunted the animals. Many smacked the rumps of passing bulls with their hands or rolled-up newspapers. Others kept their hands on the bodies of the bulls as they ran by their side.

One cowherd running behind the bulls took swipes at several unruly runners with a long wooden stick meant for egging on the bulls.

Yet the bulls ran a clean and orderly run, often galloping in single file near the guiding steers, and arriving at the bullring in just under three minutes.

An estimated 1 million people crowded into Pamplona for the festival’s closing weekend.

David Biggins, of Sussex, England, is tossed by a fighting bull from the Dolores Aguirre Ybarra ranch during the daily running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. The weeklong festival involves running with fighting bulls though the streets in the early morning, bullfights in the afternoon and around the clock partying.
