Johnson pitches in rehab start

El Paso, Texas — Randy Johnson pitched four innings Thursday night in his second rehab assignment for Double-A El Paso.

Johnson, who left the game trailing 2-0, threw 63 pitches, allowing two unearned runs and three hits.

Johnson, who threw 43 strikes and 20 balls, struck out five batters while walking one and hitting two.

Midland was shut out by Johnson for the first three innings before loading the bases with nobody out in the fourth thanks to a walk, a hit batter and an error by Junior Spivey.

Spivey was also making a rehab start.

Both Midland runs scored on sacrifice flies.

Johnson went on the 60-day disabled list on April 28 before undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on May 1 to repair bone chips and remove loose cartilage.

Martinez to pitch against Yankees

Toronto — Pedro Martinez will get his anticipated rematch against the New York Yankees when they visit Boston for a three-game series July 25-27.

Red Sox manager Grady Little said Wednesday that Martinez wouldn’t pitch in that series, but said Thursday the team changed its mind.

Little said Martinez, who plunked New York’s Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter with pitches in a game Monday, is scheduled to take the mound July 25 against New York.

Asked how important it is to him that the Red Sox rearranged the rotation so he could pitch against the Yankees, Martinez said: “It was really important. A lot of people were thinking I was avoiding them even though I was on the DL.”

Martinez was scratched from a scheduled start against the Yankees in May because of an inflamed tendon and strained muscle.

Indians’ Vizquel out another month

Cleveland — Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel has had a setback in his recovery from knee surgery and will be sidelined for at least another month.

The nine-time Gold Glove winner underwent arthroscopic surgery on June 12 and was placed on the 15-day disabled list — his first stay on the DL since 1994.

He was expected to miss only three-to-four weeks, but an MRI performed Wednesday revealed that Vizquel has more damage and he’ll be out until at least the second week in August, team spokesman Bart Swain said.

At that point, it might be wise for Vizquel, who may need more surgery, to rest his knee until next season.

Vizquel initially tore cartilage in his knee while sliding into home plate on June 6 against Arizona. The 36-year-old jammed and twisted his knee awkwardly in the soft dirt at Bank One Ballpark.
