Orioles rock Mussina, Yankees

New York's winning streak ends at eight with 7-3 setback to Baltimore

? Mike Mussina has struggled at Camden Yards before.

Just never as a New York Yankee.

Rodrigo Lopez allowed one run over 62/3 innings, and the Baltimore Orioles battered Mussina, ending the Yankees’ eight-game winning streak with a 7-3 victory Tuesday night.

“I’ve had these kind of games here before,” said Mussina, an Oriole from 1991 to 2000. “It’s tough anyplace to go walking out that early in a ballgame and know it wasn’t your best effort.”

Melvin Mora homered, and Tony Batista and B.J. Surhoff each drove in two runs for the Orioles, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Mussina (10-5) endured his shortest outing of the season, lasting only 22/3 innings and lost his first game in Baltimore as an opposing pitcher. He allowed five runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out two.

It was Mussina’s quickest exit since a two-inning stint in a 9-3 loss to Florida July 12, 2001.

“I tried everything I could try,” Mussina said. “I used every pitch I had and still found a way to give up base hits. … It’s nothing to dwell on. They had a good game. I didn’t.”

Lopez (2-4) scattered 12 hits, walked none and struck out six as Baltimore halted a nine-game losing streak to the Yankees.

Yankees manager Joe Torre (6) yanks pitcher Mike Mussina in the third inning. New York fell to Baltimore, 7-3, Tuesday in Baltimore.

New York’s Jason Giambi went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts, ending a string of 37 consecutive games in which he reached base safely. That was the second-longest of the season, behind only the 39-game streak of San Francisco’s Barry Bonds.

“He pitched big when he needed to,” Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said. “He got Giambi out … (four) different times. You get Giambi out like he did tonight, and you have really good stuff because Jason is one of the best hitters in the game today.”

A four-run third inning by Baltimore chased Mussina, who had won three straight decisions.

Tigers 5, Blue Jays 0

Detroit — Matt Roney allowed just one infield hit in seven innings to earn his first career win, pitching Detroit past Toronto. The only hit off Roney (1-2) came with two outs in the second inning when Orlando Hudson hit a hard one-hopper that deflected off second baseman Shane Halter’s glove for a single. Roney retired the next 16 batters before being lifted for Fernando Rodney.

White Sox 6, Twins 1

Chicago — Frank Thomas homered and drove in three runs to help Mark Buehrle earn his fourth straight win as Chicago defeated Minnesota. Buehrle (6-10), a 19-game winner last season, gave up one run and eight hits in eight-plus innings, continuing his turnaround from a 2-10 start.

D’Rays 4, Red Sox 3 (11)

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Rocco Baldelli scored from second base on Brandon Lyon’s errant pickoff throw with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving Tampa Bay a win. Lance Carter (5-3) pitched three innings in relief to get the win.

Anaheim, Calif. — Bengie Molina hit a three-run homer off Ismael Valdes (6-5), and Troy Glaus added a solo shot as Anaheim beat Texas. Jarrod Washburn (7-9) snapped a personal four-game losing streak despite allowing two homers to Michael Young and Alex Rodriguez’s 21st home run of the season.

A’s 3, Mariners 2 (11)

Oakland, Calif. — Pinch-hitter Terrence Long hit a game-tying single and scored the winning run on Jermaine Dye’s sacrifice fly as Oakland rallied to beat Seattle. After Ben Davis gave Seattle a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the top of the 11th against Keith Foulke (5-1), the A’s rallied in the bottom half to move within six games of the first-place Mariners in the AL West.
