Funding grants to help buy bulletproof vests

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and several other area law enforcement agencies will be receiving money to buy bulletproof vests courtesy of the federal government.

Law enforcement agencies in 102 Kansas jurisdictions will split $350,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs for the vests.

Douglas County will get $3,956, which will buy 17 vests. Other jurisdictions include:

  • Baldwin, $2,979 for eight vests.
  • Ottawa, $6,119 for 16 vests.
  • City of Leavenworth, $5,303 for 20 vests.
  • Leavenworth County, $7,404 for 30 vests.
  • Basehor, $4,283 for 13 vests.

Announcement of the funding was made by U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan.

Bike shop to offer clinic on famed race

A free clinic to educate bicyclists and noncyclists about the Tour de France will be at 8 p.m. today at Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, 804 Mass.

The clinic, called “The Tour de France for Dummies,” will discuss the competitive aspects of the event.

It will include a breakdown of the main rivals for the yellow, green, white and polka-dot jerseys, as well as a look at this year’s route and the history of the tour. French wine and cheese will also be provided. For more information, call 843-5000.
