Perry boys drop Oskie

? Perry-Lecompton High’s boys basketball team finally found an answer for Kyle Kelsay.

After watching Kelsay, Oskaloosa’s standout guard, score 26 points through 2 1/2 quarters, the Kaws settled into a box-and-one defense. Kelsay was held scoreless the rest of the way and the Perry went on to record a 69-53 victory Tuesday at OHS.

“He’s quite a player,” P-L coach Pat Hupfauf said. “We had been playing man, but we went to the box and he didn’t get another good look. It worked out well.”

Oskie led by four midway through the third quarter, but the Kaws scored 19 unanswered points.

Jacob Landis, Luke Tyner and Spencer Kennedy each took turns defending Kelsay in the box-and-one, a gimmick defense in which four players settle into a zone defense and the fifth guards the opponent’s best player — in this case, Kelsay — one-on-one.

“It was quite the game,” Hupfauf said. “It was a great comeback.”

Kennedy led Perry (4-8) with 13 points. Drew Robbins (11), David Higgins (11) and Paul Foltz (10) also scored in double figures. Kennedy also had 15 rebounds.

Travis Newell had 12 points for Oskie (4-7).

“It was a good team effort,” Hupfauf said. “All the guys played really well.”

Perry-Lecompton will travel Tuesday to Lansing.
