Oakland won’t clear center for Pro Bowl

Raider fans set fires, break windows after Sunday's lopsided loss to Tampa Bay

? Oakland Raiders center Barret Robbins, who was barred by Coach Bill Callahan from playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday after a 24-hour unexcused absence, will not play in his first Pro Bowl on Sunday in Honolulu after team doctors did not clear him medically to participate.

Robbins, 29, an eight-year NFL veteran, has had a history of depression and mental illness and remained hospitalized Monday in the San Diego area, according to a source familiar with his situation. He had been scheduled to start in the Raiders’ 48-21 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII but was added to the team’s inactive list Sunday morning and was not at the game.

According to an NFL spokesman, any Pro Bowl player on either Super Bowl team must be cleared by his team’s medical staff to play in the all-star game.

“The Raiders’ doctors did not believe he was physically fit to perform in the Pro Bowl, and they notified our office today,” NFL spokesman Joe Browne said.

Robbins’ spot on the AFC roster will be taken by New England’s Damien Woody.

A Raiders spokesman said Monday that the team would not comment further on Robbins’ situation.

Oakland fans riot: Crowds that took to the streets after the Oakland Raiders’ Super Bowl defeat left parts of the city strewn with broken glass, charred hulks of burned cars and a fast-food restaurant with nearly every window broken.

There were 80-85 arrests for violations ranging from driving under the influence to obstructing officers. Police responded to the trouble Sunday night with rubber bullets, tear gas and squads of officers that sought to disperse the crowds.

Police had assigned hundreds of extra officers to work Sunday. But trouble broke out after the game as crowds gathered. About 10 vehicles were set on fire, and crowds smashed the windows of at least one TV news van. Vandals broke nearly every window at a McDonald’s, which was also set on fire.

Three Oakland firefighters were treated for minor injuries after revelers threw bottles and rocks at them.

TV ratings up: Super Bowl XXXVII had the second-most TV viewers in NFL title game history: 137.65 million. ABC’s telecast on Sunday registered a national rating of 40.7 — 1 percent higher than last year and the best since 2000.

Johnson skips celebration: Tampa Bay quarterback Brad Johnson stayed behind in California when the Buccaneers flew home Monday to a Super Bowl celebration. Johnson stayed to take part in a parade through Disneyland and to appear on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.” Most of his teammates headed to Raymond James Stadium for a welcome by an estimated 65,000 fans. Johnson said he would take an overnight flight back to Tampa, arriving in time for the team’s victory parade today.
