Turkey permits available

? Permit applications for the spring turkey season are online and available to download from the Wildlife and Parks Internet site.

Permits for both residents and nonresidents for units 1, 2, and 3 will be available over the counter at KDWP offices and select license vendors by mid-February. The season will run from April 9 to May 18.

A separate season for hunters ages 16 and younger will be April 4-6. During this season, the youths must hunt under the immediate supervision of an adult who may not hunt. The adult must be at least 21 years old. A turkey permit or game tag valid during the regular season is required.

Unit 4, which includes portions of western and southwestern Kansas, has only 175 general resident permits. Hunters must apply for a Unit 4 permit by filling out an application and submitting it along with payment to the Pratt office by Feb. 21.

In units 1, 2 and 3, turkey permits are limited to one per hunter. They may be purchased over the counter through May 17. In addition, any hunter who already has a turkey permit — general resident, landowner-tenant, or hunt-own-land for any unit, as well as nonresident permits — may also purchase a second turkey game tag for units 2 and 3 which include eastern and southcentral Kansas.

General resident turkey permits are $20.50; resident landowner-tenant and hunt-own land permits are $10.50 (special application to Pratt office required); nonresident permits are $30.50 and second turkey game tags are $10.50. Unless exempt by law, hunters are also required to have a valid Kansas hunting license.
