‘Souper Bowl’ raises $4,000 for Arts Center

More than $4,000 was raised for the Lawrence Arts Center at Saturday’s “Souper Bowl,” said education director Margaret Morris.

The event drew several hundred people, including Lawrence resident Shawn Norris, above, who for $10 could choose a handmade bowl and have it filled with soup.

Morris said the support for the center from both residents and businesses was encouraging — this year’s raised nearly twice last year’s $2,100.

Hy-Vee donated chicken tortilla and cream of broccoli soup to the event, and Great Harvest Bread Co. provided rolls. Area artists made many of the brightly colored bowls.

Proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing a gas kiln for the Arts Center.

Crime: Police seek assistance finding parole violator

Douglas County law enforcement agencies are asking the public for help in finding a man wanted for parole violation and thought to be in the Lawrence area.

Jesse W. Remby, 42, had been out of prison on parole after being convicted in Shawnee County of felony theft and fleeing and eluding police officers, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Information wasn’t available about how Remby violated his parole.

Remby weighs 180 pounds. He is 6 feet tall. He may be driving a blue Chevrolet Cavalier with a Shawnee County license plate.

If anyone has information that can lead to his arrest, call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS (8477). Callers remain anonymous, and Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to caller identification. A reward of up to $1,000 is possible.

Weather: Low-income families can apply for heat help

Topeka — Applications are being taken for programs designed to help low-income Kansans pay energy bills.

The Low Income Energy Assistance Program provides annual benefits to qualifying families to pay heating bills. Applications are being accepted through March.

The Kansas Weatherization Program also is available to help low-income families pay for weatherization needs. To apply, call (800) 752-4422.

Region: Accident kills driver

A Wabaunsee County man was killed Saturday in a one-vehicle accident in Jefferson County.

Tracy R. Logan, 32, Alma, was southbound about 3:10 a.m. on Kansas Highway 4 near Valley Falls when he lost control of his Chevy Blazer and overcorrected, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The vehicle struck the west guardrail and overturned, ejecting Logan. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
