Phil H. Rueschhoff

Mr. Rueschhoff died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at his home.

He was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Angelus, the son of John and Louise (Ostmeyer) Rueschhoff. He received his bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Nebraska and his master’s and doctorate of education in art education from Pennsylvania State University. He also attended Southern Methodist University, University of London and Alliance Francaise in Paris. He had lived in Lawrence for more than 40 years.

Mr. Rueschhoff was professor emeritus in the fine arts department at Kansas University, where he taught from 1960 to 1964 and from 1973 to 1980. When he retired, he was head of the art education department. He also taught at Dannebrog Public School in Dannebrog, Neb., from 1946 to 1948, Pennsylvania State University from 1951 to 1952, University of Nebraska from 1949 to 1950 and from 1959 to 1960, and was a guest professor at McPherson College and Black Hills State College. He also was a guest lecturer at many public schools and universities, consultant to school districts and an art juror for several exhibitions. He wrote “Teaching Art in the Elementary School” with Evelyn M. Swartz, as well as numerous articles.

Survivors include two sisters, Alma A. Mosier, Greenwood Village, Colo., and Anne Whitehair, Abilene.

The family suggests memorials to the KU art department, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
