NBA Roundup: Pierce’s 40 propel Celts

Boston rallies from 23 down to beat Philadelphia

? Antoine Walker didn’t let a sore knee affect his shooting.

Walker scored 33 points, including the winning 3-pointer in the final minute, and former Jayhawk Paul Pierce had 40, leading the Boston Celtics to a 100-99 comeback victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.

Boston, which trailed by 23 early in the third quarter, has won four in a row.

“Walker has a pretty sore knee so my response was to play him (46) minutes,” Celtics coach Jim O’Brien said. “I told him it would keep warm that way.”

Allen Iverson had 29 points, and Eric Snow added 17 for the Sixers, who have lost eight of 10.

Walker’s 3-pointer with 30 seconds left gave the Celtics a one-point lead. The Sixers had three chances to win it in the final seconds, but Aaron McKie missed a shot and Snow missed two, including a 19-footer before the buzzer.

“We had good looks,” Sixers coach Larry Brown said. “We’re not making plays. That’s why we’re losing.”

Pierce scored 26 in the second half, and finished 13-for-26. Walker had 19 in the second half, and shot 12-for-24. The Celtics were 22-for-34 in the final two quarters.

Boston played without two starters, center Tony Battie and guard Tony Delk. Battie missed his fourth straight game because of a sore right knee. Delk sat out his second in a row because of a sprained left ankle.

“We’re a resilient group,” Pierce said. “We never give up. Most teams down 20 against a team like Philly wouldn’t come back. You’ve got to bury us in a grave to stop up from coming back.”

A jumper by Pierce gave the Celtics their first lead, 95-94 with 3:16 left. Pierce then hit a 20-footer to make it 97-94.

Boston's paul pierce drives between Philadelphia's Allen Iverson, left, and Derrick Coleman. The Celtics beat the 76ers 100-99 on Monday in Philadelphia.

Boston went on runs of 14-0 and 11-0 in the third quarter, tying the game on a 3-pointer by Pierce with one second left in the third.

The Nets had a chance to force a second overtime, but Jason Kidd’s 3-point attempt just before the buzzer missed. Kidd felt he was fouled by Malone on the play and he and several other Nets stood on the floor in dismay after no call was made.
