When the Spencer Museum of Art opened its doors to the public in 1978, music by a Chamber Winds woodwind quintet filled the galleries. When the museum celebrates its 25th birthday on Saturday, the Chamber Winds will be there, playing again.

In fact, three of the five who played on opening day still perform actively in the Lawrence Woodwind Quintet. They are Barbara Jones, oboe; Paul Jordan, clarinet; and Stuart Levine, French horn.

Because of a health problem and jury duty, the Lawrence Woodwind Quintet had to pass up the 2003 Spencer birthday party. The CottonWood Winds, the other Chamber Winds quintet, will perform instead.

Levine, who plays in both ensembles, will represent the original gang that made music in 1978. The other CottonWood Winds performers are Alan Holland, clarinet; Sharon Learned, flute; Sarah Dewein, bassoon; and Tim Burfeind, oboe.

As part of the cake-cutting ceremony following their concert, the CottonWood Winds will accompany the audience in singing “Happy Birthday” to the Spencer and will invite the crowd to dance to a series of dance variations of the song.

The Lawrence Woodwind Quintet is much older than the Spencer Museum. Jones, Jordan and Levine were part of the ensemble that played for the art museum in its original home, Spooner Hall.
