Area Boys Roundup: Ottawa nips Atchison, 80-73

Baldwin falls to G-E; Lansing, McLouth, P-L each lose

? Ottawa High’s boys basketball team made 20-of-29 free-throw attempts Friday night and edged Atchison, 80-73, for the Cyclones’ eighth straight victory.

Ross Thompson and Lee Baldwin both scored 21 points to lead Ottawa, which improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the Huron League.

Andrew Maxwell added 14 points and Jarod Sigmund seven for the Cyclones.

Atchison’s Marquette Jones led all players with 23 points, but the Redmen made only 1-of-9 foul shots.

Ottawa will play Baldwin Tuesday in the first round of the Baldwin Invitational Tournament.

Baldwin — Trailing by four points entering the fourth quarter, Gardner-Edgerton outscored Baldwin, 20-9, to pick up the victory.

“It’s very disappointing because we played good enough to win,” BHS coach Jeff Haas said.

Of the fourth quarter, Haas carefully explained, “Gardner shot a lot of free throws, and shot them well.”

The Bulldogs were led on offense by Joe Gipp’s 18 points, followed by Andy Hannon with 14 and Brian Lauridsen with 11.

Baldwin (2-8) plays host to Riley County tonight.

McLouth — Five different players scored in double figures for McLouth, but the Bulldogs were dumped by Troy. Travis Steffey scored a team-high 14 points for McLouth (4-4).

Kansas City, Kan. — Piper scored 27 points in the third quarter and pulled away from Perry-Lecompton.

“We’ve been so good defensively,” P-L coach Pat Hupfauf said. “The last four games we’ve been so solid, but tonight we didn’t play as good as we have been so that’s disappointing.”

The Kaws received 14 points from Spencer Kennedy and 11 from Jacob Landis.

P-L (2-5) will play Effingham on Tuesday at the McLouth Tournament.

Lansing — Jacob Eaton and David Woods each scored 15 points, leading Mill Valley to victory.

Hosea Morgan had 14 points and Brian Kern 12 for Lansing, which only trailed by four points going into the fourth quarter.
