Arctic weather to continue through Sunday

Friday morning’s temperature checked in at 12 degrees and the windchill dipped to 2 — in Nome, Alaska.

But here in Lawrence, 3,259 miles to the southeast, folks had even more reason to shiver.

At 9 a.m. the thermometer struggled to 1 degree and the windchill rates a nasty minus-13 at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

The sub-arctic conditions are expected to continue until Sunday, said Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist.

And don’t bother calling him to complain.

“I like it. I enjoy being cold like this,” Makens said. “Of course I don’t like walking around on sheets of ice, but I do like the cold.”

Makens noted Lawrence’s recent extremes: Florida-like weather last week, against current conditions similar to the land of the polar bears.

“It’s kind of weird how it how happens,” he said. “We went from 77 to minus-1 within a week.”

Friday’s forecast calls for highs in the mid 20s, with sunny skies and winds of 5 to 10 mph. Windchills should range from minus-10 early to about 10 above Friday afternoon.

The overnight forecast calls for a slight chance of snow after midnight.

“It won’t be flurries, just be a couple of flakes,” Makens said.

He expects the overnight low to be 10 degres, with windchills around zero.

“Saturday, we’ll start off cloudy and we’ll start to notice some clearing later in the day, but it will be a little windier than this afternoon,” he said. Expect Saturday’s high to be 25, with windchills down to zero during the day.

“Sunday, we’ll have a big return of the sun — high temperature of about 39 to 40. And we will stay in the 40s for Monday and Tuesday,” he said. “People had better enjoy the 40s for those three days, because then we’ll be cold again.”
