Lions place second at SM South invite

? In the 12-school Shawnee Mission South Invitational, Lawrence High’s wrestling squad proved its mettle on Saturday.

Aaron Madill, Clayton Kellerman and Kenny Poeverlein each earned first-place finishes, helping the Lions finish in second place with 1711¼2 points behind first-place Platte County, Mo. (209).

The wins by Madill (160-pound class), Kellerman (215) and Poeverlein (275) capped an impressive team performance by the Lions, as no LHS wrestler placed lower than eighth. Nolan Kellerman finished second at 145, and Brendan Halpin placed third at 135.

LHS coach Mark Dulgarian was pleased with the Lions’ finish against the tough competition of the invite.

“We had some underclassmen come up and score points. Even if you get beat, if you win the right ones you’re going to score team points,” he said.

“It’s an indication of what potential there can be.”

Dulgarian said stacking up against many different schools gave the Lions a good gauge of their chances come state tournament time.

“Anything can happen in the tournament if you have some base people to go on,” he said. “We had young kids that stepped it up.”
