Ames, Iowa ? A valiant comeback effort by the Kansas University women’s basketball squad fell short on Saturday, as the Jayhawks lost 72-70 to Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum.

Trailing 39-29 at halftime, the Jayhawks surged in the second half behind solid shooting and Cyclone mistakes. Kansas (7-6 overall, 0-2 Big 12 Conference) canned 16 of 33 (48.5 percent) shots in the second half to ISU’s 11-for-28 (39.3) shooting.

But with three seconds left and the game tied at 70, Cyclone guard Lindsey Wilson nailed two free throws. On the ensuing inbounds play, freshman Erica Hallman misplayed freshman Crystal Kemp’s inbounds pass and ended KU’s chances.

Sophomore Aquanita Burras led five Jayhawks in double figures with 14 points.

Sophomores Blair Waltz and Stacey Becker each added 12, and freshman Tamara Ransburg and Hallman each poured in 11. Ransburg added nine rebounds, as did freshman reserve Nichelle Roberts.

Becker sank a game-high four three-point attempts, and her 12 points marked the sixth straight game a KU bench player had scored in double figures.

Kansas outrebounded Iowa State 43-24, but committed 20 turnovers to the Cyclones’ 13.

Lindsey Wilson and Mary Cofield led ISU (6-7, 1-1) with 16 points each.

The Jayhawks’ next game will tip off at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla.
