Baldwin batters beat-up Wellsville

? Eleven matches into Thursday’s wrestling dual between Wellsville and Baldwin, “lacking” described the luster in this matchup between two of Class 4A and 3-2-1A’s top 10-ranked teams.

The Bulldogs were whipping an ill, injury-riddled Eagle squad 60-5 behind the brawn of nine junior varsity wrestlers and the help of seven Wellsville forfeits.

But the 100 or so spectators who waited for the 189-pound weight class saw quite a show — and eventually a 72-8 Baldwin victory, which pushed the Bulldogs’ dual record to 6-2.

Two state qualifiers at 189 from a year ago, Wellsville’s Todd Roberts and Baldwin’s Dan Hamilton, didn’t quit.

Neither did the match, until the second overtime. Roberts scored an escape for a 2-1 decision over Hamilton, 4A’s fourth-ranked 189-pounder.

“It’s the toughest match I’ve had so far this season,” said Roberts, a senior who has never placed at state. “He’s a great wrestler, but once I scored my first escape I knew I might have a chance to get away later if he didn’t take me down.”

Hamilton was in good position late in the third period, but couldn’t manufacture a point to tie the match at 1.

“I’m not a late-match wrestler,” said Hamilton, who was leading the Bulldogs entering Thursday’s dual with 12 escapes.

His escape in the third pushed the match into overtime.

Despite starting down in the first 30-second, first-to-score extra period, Hamilton couldn’t escape for a point and victory. Roberts slowly found his feet in the second and broke Hamilton’s grasp.

“This is my last time to medal at state, so I’m going out trying to prove something every match,” said Hamilton. “And today, I did that against a great wrestler.”
