County to compensate Watkins for testing

Kansas University’s Watkins Student Health Center soon will be getting reimbursed for gathering evidence.

Douglas County commissioners agreed Monday that the county would pay the health center $250 each time Watkins personnel collect medical evidence for cases suspected of involving rape, indecent liberties with a child or criminal sodomy.

Watkins personnel already have been collecting such evidence when requested by a law enforcement officer but have not been paid for the work, Dist. Atty. Christine Kenney said.

The county already has such an agreement with Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Resident charged with burglary, theft

A 31-year-old Lawrence man arrested last month in a burglary investigation was charged Friday in Douglas County District Court.

Craig L. Brigham faces one count of burglary and one count of felony theft. He is currently free on bond.

Brigham was arrested after a police officer radioed the description of a vehicle that was leaving the scene of a burglary in the 900 block of Arkansas Street.

Police also are investigating the mysterious findings of small pieces of paper in apartment doors in complexes. Police found evidence they alleged might link Brigham with those pieces of paper, but no other charges have been filed at this time.
