Voters narrow fields in area primaries

Voters narrowed the fields of candidates for seats on city councils and schools boards in several area counties.

Top finishers in each race will appear on ballots for the general election April 1. All results are unofficial, pending review of provisional ballots.

In Leavenworth County, five of seven candidates for the Tonganoxie City Council remain in the running: Ron Cranor, with 119 votes; Lois Seelbinder, 97, and Velda Roberts, 84. Two candidates tied for the fourth and final spot on the ballot: James Truesdell and Mike Weston each had 80 votes.

Results could change after they are canvassed this week.

Two candidates remain for Tonganoxie mayor: Herbert Robbins, with 123 votes; and David Taylor, with 91.

For the Tonganoxie school board, two candidates remain for a board seat: Rick Lamb, with 163 votes; and Joel Stinson, with 44.

Six of seven candidates for Leavenworth City Commission are moving on to the general election: Vicky Kaaz, with 737 votes; Lisa Weakley, 721; Brian Grittmann, 615; Phil Urban, 566; Ella Tayrien, 503, and Phil Martin, 384.

For Basehor City Commission, six of 11 candidates advanced: Iris Dysart, with 119 votes; John Bonee, 98; Joseph Odle, 76; William Hooker and Joe Hotujac, each with 72; and David Breuer, 66. Steven Cole had 64.

For the Easton school board, Sharon Wagner, with 28 votes, and Jim Heintzelman, with 22, remain in the running for a board seat. Also moving on to the general election for another board seat: James Stafford, with 35 votes; and Butch Bollin, with 30.

In Jefferson County, voters narrowed the fields for two school board races.

In the race for an at-large seat on the Oskaloosa school board, incumbent John Metzger, with 95 votes, and Gary Willits, with 60 votes, advanced to the April 1 general election. Eight percent of registered voters in the Oskaloosa district voted.

In the Valley Falls school district, Beryl Darrah received 36 votes, and Brent Littleton garnered 16 to earn spots on the general election ballot. John K. Coleman, with six votes, was eliminated. Four percent of registered voters in the Valley Falls district cast ballots.

Franklin County voters settled four races.

For Wellsville mayor, John Wilhite, with 125 votes, and Jeanine Berrier, with 34 votes, will face off in the general election.

For Williamsburg City Council, the top four finishers Tuesday will vie for two seats in April: Incumbent David Staley, with 45 votes; Ray Gooding and Sam Tipton, who tied with 25 votes; and Kenneth Messick, with 20 votes.

In the Appanoose-Pomona-Williamsburg school district, two candidates will compete in April for at at-large seat on the school board: incumbent Mary Ann Parkin, who had 128 votes; and Kevin Reece, with 85 votes.

In the Central Heights school district, two candidates advanced to the general election for a board seat: Don Hobbs, with 204 votes; and Elizabeth “Betty” A. Raby, with 107 votes.
