Snow storm headed to Lawrence Friday night

Lawrence might get a few snowflakes overnight. But the real deal will bluster in two days from now, says a local forecaster.

“We are looking at a big storm for Friday,” said Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist. “It would be late Friday into Saturday morning. We could pick up a couple of inches of snow.”

Makens said a storm system passing through the state will bypass the Lawrence area.

“We could get a few flakes late tonight,” Makens said.

“Places this morning, just north of Springfield, Mo., picked up this morning a couple of inches,” he said. “Around tonight, the heaviest snow band will go through Tulsa, Springfield and St. Louis, along Interstate Highway 44. They could see a few inches. “

The high Wednesday will be in the low 20s, with temperatures falling to 17 by early Thursday morning.

The high Friday will be right at the freezing mark, he said.

“It looks like the storm track is going to be a little farther to the north, which would put the heavier snow closer to us in northeast Kansas,” he said.

After the storm passes, temperatures will stay in the 30s through Sunday, then rise into the 40s Monday, he said.

“The low will be anywhere from the mid-teens to the lower 20s by the start of next week,” he said.
