Lawrence events to feature Averill’s cooking style

There are a couple of events scheduled in Lawrence that are associated with Tom Averill’s novel, “Secrets of the Tsil Cafe,” and the New World cooking he presents in it.

There will be a cooking demonstration, discussion and book signing featuring Averill and Nancy O’Connor, nutrition educator, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 5 at the Community Mercantile Co-op, 901 Iowa.

Averill will read from his book and discuss how he devised the recipes that appear in it. Three dishes from the novel will be prepared.

There is no fee to attend the demonstration, but registration is required and space is limited. For more information, contact O’Connor at 843-8544.

Michael Levy, owner of West Side Deli & Market, 4931 W. Sixth St., and Averill, in conjunction with Read Across Lawrence, will present “An Evening at the Tsil Cafe” Monday .

The prix fix meal, which costs $19 per person, will feature dishes from Averill’s novel, such as: black bean and gooseberry enchiladas and guacamole; avocado-gooseberry pudding with chocolate-chile sauce; and potato and green chile soup.

There will be two seatings during the event, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. No reservations will be accepted after Saturday . To make reservations, call 840-9044.
