Tennis: No. 15 Longhorns sweep Jayhawks

? Heading into Saturday’s Big 12 Conference opener against No. 15 Texas, things looked pretty good for Kansas University’s tennis team.

The Jayhawks were 2-0 after 4-3 victories against Brigham Young and Southwest Missouri State.

Then the Longhorns made their way to Wood Valley Racquet Club and thrashed the Jayhawks, 7-0. Texas (1-1) won all three doubles and all six singles matches for a clean sweep.

“This is Texas, so this is the toughest Big 12 match to start with,” Kansas coach Kilmeny Waterman said. “They take control and the most out of every opportunity. We have to up our level of play a little bit. We wanted to compete at every spot and I think we did that.”

Texas isn’t exactly a hapless foe. Since the inception of the Big 12, the Longhorns have won the conference championship every year, only losing one conference match.

The Longhorns started the season with a tough loss Feb. 9 against Miami.

“It was a good start to the Big 12 season,” Texas coach Jeff Moore said.

“But more importantly it was far better than our opening start against Miami. This team realizes it builds confidence each match.”

The Jayhawks must bounce back at 1 p.m. today against Utah (2-2) at Wood Valley, and Waterman is hoping for a sweep.

“Our goal is to come out tomorrow and do what Texas did to us,” she said.
