Shockers shock Bluejays – WSU 80, No. 12 Creighton 74

? Kyle Korver lost his stroke, found it for a while — and then lost it again, just when his team most needed a lift from its senior forward.

Creighton’s leading scorer hit several clutch shots after a disastrous first half Saturday, but his three misses down the stretch helped Wichita State upend the 12th-ranked Bluejays, 80-74 — the Shockers’ first win over a ranked team since 1990.

Aaron Hogg scored the go-ahead layup with just less than a minute left and led the Shockers (14-8, 9-4 Missouri Valley) with 27 points. WSU went 5-for-6 from the line in the final 32 seconds. All of those points came after misses by Korver.

“Kyle didn’t play very well,” Creighton coach Dana Altman said. “We’ve put a tremendous amount of pressure on him all year, and the last couple of weeks he hasn’t been playing as well as he can play.”

Korver led Creighton (22-3, 12-2) with 15 points. Center Brody Deren said Korver shouldn’t take all of the blame.

“I think sometimes we look at him the way everybody else looks at him and expect him to do everything for us,” said Deren, who had eight points and was held to two rebounds. “We need to look at him as just another teammate and do things to help him out.”

Jamar Howard added three key late free throws and 18 points for the Shockers, whose last previous win over a ranked team was a 74-71 overtime victory against No. 12 Alabama on Dec. 4, 1990.

Howard’s defense also held Korver — who came in leading Creighton with 18.1 points per game — to two points on 1-for-4 shooting in the first half.

“I wouldn’t say I really held him,” Howard said. “He’s a great player. I just tried to keep him outside, and he just wasn’t hitting his shots.”
