Area Girls Roundup: Wilson sets record in Kaws’ loss

? Her team lost, but Perry-Lecompton senior Shannon Wilson knew she played a good game Tuesday in a 73-65 loss to Basehor-Linwood.

Just how good Wilson was took a while to determine. After all, there were a lot of numbers to add up.

Forty-four points.

Sixteen of 24 from the three-point line.

Several assists.

“When a kid accounts for 50 points, she’s doing some things on the offensive end,” said P-L coach Kevin Bost.

It was a season high for Wilson, who broke the school record of 38 points she set earlier this season.

“It feels really good, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” she said.

But impressive as her performance was, it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats held P-L to just four second-quarter points.

“That second quarter cost us,” Bost said.

Ottawa 47, Santa Fe Trail 44

Ottawa — If the trend continues, Ottawa fans should look for Liz Burks to score close to 30 points next time she puts on a uniform.

In the last three games she’s scored 22, 25 and 26 points, with Tuesday’s performance helping Ottawa (9-7) hand the Chargers just their fourth loss of the season.

Included in the performance was a three-pointer that gave Ottawa the lead for good in the fourth quarter.

“She had a huge game,” said Cyclones coach Cliff McCullough. “She’s turned it on, and it’s a good time for her to be doing that.”

McCullough said he was also pleased with his team’s defense, which held SFT’s 6-foot, 4-inch Melisa Ball to only 13 points.

The Cyclones play host Friday to Kansas City Turner. SFT (11-4) travels to KC Piper.

Tonganoxie 47, Kansas City Piper 43

Kansas City — Despite what Tonganoxie coach Randy Kraft called a “lethargic” performance, the Chieftains held out to improve their record to 8-7.

“It was not one of our better ones,” he said, but “it was enough, and at crunch time the kids gave a pretty gutsy performance.”

Michelle McWilliams led Tongie with 11 points, as the Chieftains claimed their fourth win in the last five games.

Tonganoxie plays host Friday to Mill Valley.

Spring Hill 60, Eudora 33

Eudora — It was a matter of being outsized that dropped Eudora to 5-11, said coach Cara Kimberlin.

“The score doesn’t reflect how hard the kids played,” she said. “They’re going to beat on you, and beat on you, and beat you down if you don’t have the size to match up with them.”

And it didn’t help, Kimberlin said, that Spring Hill’s Jessica Hocker hit five three-pointers, en route to a game-high 19 points.
