A blizzard that left heavy snow in other parts of the region spared Lawrence. Only flurries of snow occurred here.

Douglas County’s official census process unnecessarily was costing its taxpayers about $45,000 a year, the state office of planning and research reported. A state study had concluded that Douglas County was among the numerous counties losing money by doing their own censuses rather than using what officials called the more reliable U.S. Census Bureau demographic figures. Lawrence was consistently shorted by the local census in comparison to the federal headcount.

From the Lawrence Daily World of Feb. 8, 1903: “The (highly rated) Westport athletic association lost to the Haskell Indians at basketball Saturday evening in a very one-sided game, the score being 45 to 15. … There were some good plays in the game but on the whole it was a poor exhibition. Oliver, Guyen and Archiquette carried the honors for Haskell, which has been doing very well.”
