Westar Energy crews were working to restore power to about 450 Lawrence residents late Monday afternoon in southwest Lawrence.

A Westar spokeswoman says the outage occurred about 3 p.m. Monday when equipment failure caused a pole to catch fire.

It initially affected about 3,000 customers, but the majority had power restored within half an hour, the spokeswoman said.
