Mount Saint Scholastica rips Bulldogs, 55-32, in semis

? McLouth High girls basketball coach Vicki Bechard decided to mix things up Friday in her team’s semifinal against Atchison Mount Saint Scholastica in the Jefferson County North Invitational.

After all, a man-to-man defensive scheme worked well last week, when McLouth cut an enormous Scholastica lead before losing 55-44 in Atchison.

It wasn’t so Friday. The man-to-man defense failed, and the Ravens routed the Bulldogs, 55-32, behind pounding physical play and superior shooting.

“They’re a really good team,” said Bechard, whose 5-7 squad will play in today’s 5 p.m. consolation game against Atchison, which was defeated in the other semifinal by Jefferson West, 53-31.

“We got kind of frustrated because of their physical play, and we don’t play well mad.”

Bulldog senior Courtney Edmonds, with 18 points, again shouldered the scoring load for McLouth. But she couldn’t escape Scholastica’s constant double-teaming, and she also seemed fatigued after guarding Scholastica’s Jill Garrett, who scored a game-high 20 points.”

“They’re just awesome,” said Edmonds, who had accounted for eight of McLouth’s 12 first-half points. “I don’t think there was a single time when they didn’t take advantage of our defense by hitting open shots.”
