Historical quilt depicts Lewis & Clark scenes

A quilt depicting scenes from the Lewis and Clark expedition is on tour around Kansas.

Members of Wyandotte County’s Grinter Place Quilters spent about 1,000 hours making the quilt, which has been exhibited at schools, libraries and museums in the Kansas City area and elsewhere since it was finished in June.

The quilters dress in period attire for presentations.

Quilter Liz Hollis, a retired special education teacher, said one of her favorite panels was called “trial and punishment.” The panel features a whiskey barrel and whip, recalling the harsh punishment given to explorers who stole from the expedition’s liquor supplies and drank too much.

‘Romeo’ pleads guilty to defrauding dates

A Raytown man admitted that he romanced 22 women in a scheme to steal more than $90,000 from financial institutions, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Ryan S. Blevins, 28, pleaded guilty Monday to wire and bank fraud and could face up to 90 years in prison without parole and a $3 million fine, prosecutors said. A sentencing date has not been set.

U.S. Atty. Todd Graves said Blevins admitted initiating romantic relationships with women so that he could make them unwitting accomplices

Typically, Graves said, Blevins told the women he didn’t have a checking account but needed to deposit a check.

Afterward, Blevins would ask the women to give him cash, wire him money, or write a check.
