St. Joseph livestock

St. Joseph, Mo. (ap) — Quotations for Monday:

Slaughter Cattle Auction Open, Mid-Session, and Close

Estimated Receipts: 100.

There was not enough of any class of cattle on offer at St. Joseph to establish a price trend. The discovery of a cow with mad cow disease last week in Washington is playing havoc with livestock marketings and the entire industry. A majority of auctions throughout the nation closed for the holidays and a few that were on cap are being canceled until conditions and prices stabilize. The CME feeder cattle futures are down the limit, which has been moved to $5, and locked in across the board. Eighteen countries have banned the imports of U.S. beef. The infected animal may have came out of Canada. Direct feedlots sold a few slaughter steers and heifers late last week at 78.00. A year ago feedlot sales were quoted at 73.00- 74.00.

The bred cow sale scheduled at St. Joseph, Mo., for this afternoon has been postponed. The special New Years Day Feeder Cattle sale has been moved to Jan. 7.

Estimated Hog Receipts: 150. Compared to last week, barrow and gilts sold 2.00 higher; 46-50 percent lean 230-270 lbs 31.50-32.00. Sows: 1.00 lower; 1-2 300-500 lbs 24.00-25.00; 1-3 500-700 lbs 28.00-30.00. Boars: Steady; 300-700 lbs 8.00.
