KU official among injured in Christmas Eve crash

Three hospitalized after two-car collision

Kansas University Associate Vice Provost Richard Morrell was among three people injured Wednesday night in a two-car accident near 27th and Iowa streets.

Morrell was one of two victims taken from the scene by helicopter to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where he currently is in intensive care.

A third victim, who was driving the other vehicle, was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

KU spokesman Todd Cohen said Thursday that Morrell suffered broken ribs and a ruptured spleen in the accident. The injuries are not life threatening, he said.

Morrell’s wife, Kerry, who was traveling with him, was not seriously injured.

The accident occurred about 6 p.m. when William P. Moore IV, the driver of a 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada sport utility vehicle, was traveling southbound on Iowa.

Moore’s vehicle crossed over the northbound lanes of traffic and went onto 27th Street, police said. Once on 27th Street, the SUV crossed two more lanes of traffic, jumped the median and struck the side of a 1987 Nissan Maxima traveling east on 27th.

Richard Morrell was driving the Maxima, and Kerry Morrell was a passenger in the car.

The Morrells were taken by helicopter to the Overland Park hospital, while Moore was transported to LMH.

Moore’s condition was not available Thursday.

The Lawrence Police Department did not have any information to release Thursday about the cause of the accident, according to Sgt. Paul Fellers.

Moore and the Morrells are all Lawrence residents.

Richard Morrell works in KU’s office of student success. Before his appointment as associate vice provost, he served as university registrar. He has worked at KU since 1989.
