ISU’s Barnes ineligible

? Guard Tim Barnes has failed to regain his eligibility with the Iowa State basketball team, ending his college career.

Barnes was academically ineligible for the first semester and had been awaiting his grades to learn if he would be able to return to competition.

The athletic department announced Tuesday he would not be eligible. Barnes had been practicing with the team in case he could return.

“My heart goes out to Tim Barnes,” Iowa State coach Wayne Morgan said. “We all love him. He did everything he could coming down the stretch to make it. He did not.”

A 6-foot senior, Barnes was in his fifth season and has no more eligibility. Morgan said he would encourage Barnes to stay in school and get his degree.

“I have every intention of having him staying in school,” Morgan said.

Barnes transferred to Iowa State from Southeastern Illinois Community College and became the Cyclones’ starting point guard last season.

He was the third-leading scorer with an 11.3 average, led the team in assists (5.0) and steals (1.3), was second in three-point baskets (57) and made the Big 12’s all-newcomer team.
