Slaughter Cattle Auction Close

Estimated Receipts: 275

Compared to last week, slaughter steers and heifers 3.00-5.00 lower. Last week the direct feedlot trade was also 3.00-5.00 lower at 91.00-92.00 on a live basis and dressed sales 142.50. At St. Joseph Monday slaughter cows and bulls about steady. Lower slaughter cattle prices despite very meager year end slaughter as boxed beef cutouts continue to plummet. Consumer demand turning to cheaper pork and poultry. Friday’s Cattle On Feed Report showed numbers up 4 percent from a year ago but November placements down 3 percent and marketings showed a big 11 percent drop. The St. Joseph, MO weekly feeder cattle sale was held on Monday this week in conjunction with the regular slaughter cattle auction. Not enough was on offer to establish price trends, quotes or weighted averages. However, next week the weekly feeder cattle auction will be held on Thursday January 01, 2004 and a good run is expected, estimating over 3500. Monday of next week, December the 29th a bred cow sale will be held at 1 pm following the regular slaughter cattle auction.

Slaughter Heifers: pkg Choice 3 1275 lbs 86.50.

Slaughter Cows: Breaking 70-80 percent lean 48.00-51.00, high dressing 51.00-55.00. Boning 80-85 percent lean 46.00-49.00, high dressing 49.00-55.00, low dressing 38.00-45.00. Lean 85-90 percent lean Scarce.

Slaughter Bulls: Yield Grade 1-2 1350-2150 lbs 55.00-61.00, high dressing 62.00-65.00, low dressing 50.00-54.00.
