John Douglas Benton

? Services for John Douglas Benton, 56, Garnett, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Garnett. Burial will be in Garnett Cemetery.

Mr. Benton died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Anderson County Hospital in Garnett.

He was born Aug. 25, 1947, in Stafford, the son of Archie Bill and Irene (Kinkaid) Benton. He graduated from Stafford High School in 1965 and earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary business education from Emporia State University in 1969 and a master’s degree in 1983, also from Emporia State.

He taught at Westphalia High School from 1969 to 1970, then taught high school in Garnett from 1970 until he retired in 2001. He managed the Garnett swimming pool from 1993 to 1996 and worked part-time for Pat Winfrey Realty from 2001 to 2003.

Mr. Benton was a member of First Christian Church in Garnett, where he had served as a deacon, Sunday school treasurer and chairman of the education committee. He coached boys’ and girls’ summer ball teams for many years.

He married Joyce Anne Cramer on June 1, 1968, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include his mother, Hutchinson; a daughter, Angela Wright, Haysville; a sister, Linda Burkhart, Hutchinson; and a grandchild.

A son, William Jaye, died Oct. 10, 1993.
