How to help: New shelter has many needs

The Lawrence Open Shelter provides overnight sleeping space for up to 20 people. The organization needs volunteers in several areas. They can help staff the overnight shelter in shifts, including 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Volunteers will enforce shelter rules. Training will be provided and volunteers must be comfortable working with a diverse group of people. Volunteer couriers are also needed to pick up food donations for the shelter daily or to transport linens to a cleaning service and return cleaned linens once a week. Volunteer couriers must provide own transportation.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Jubilee Cafe serves breakfast to the homeless community from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Friday mornings. The organization needs individual and group volunteers to help at meals from Dec. 16 to Jan. 20. Volunteers will prepare and serve breakfast to guests. Meals are served at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. Call Liz Villines at 760-1429 to schedule a date to volunteer.
  • The Salvation Army has many volunteer opportunities for the holiday season, including assisting with the shelter Christmas party on Dec. 24. The Salvation Army always needs volunteers to assist with preparing and serving daily meals at the shelter. For more information call 843-4188.
  • The Douglas County Dental Clinic needs volunteer registered dental hygienists during weekdays from now through Jan. 15. Hours are flexible. The clinic serves uninsured children and adults in need of dental care. For more information call Jason Wesco at 312-7770.
