Mavericks keep Magic in misery

Dallas deals Orlando 19th straight setback, 110-97

? Make it 19 losses in a row for the Orlando Magic, who are closing in on the NBA record for consecutive defeats.

While they’ve managed to hang close for a while — as they did again Saturday night — it’s always the same ending for the Magic: another loss. The latest was 110-97 to the Dallas Mavericks.

“We couldn’t sustain things. That’s the way it’s been going,” Magic coach Johnny Davis said. “We’re competitive for the great part of the game, and wind up on the bad end of it.”

Despite his continued shooting woes, Tracy McGrady had the Magic within 64-63 after making his first two shots after halftime — a slam dunk and a three-pointer. But Orlando never could go in front.

Michael Finley responded with a three-pointer, and by time he hit another one five minutes later, the Mavs had built their lead to 79-69. It never got closer than nine points after that.

“It was a situation where we couldn’t get over the hump,” said Juwan Howard, who had a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. “It’s very frustrating. No one in here thought we’d start the season like this.”

Next up for Orlando is Phoenix Monday night at home, where the Magic are 0-11.

The single-season NBA record for consecutive losses is 23 by the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995-96 and the Denver Nuggets in 1997-98. The overall record is 24 by the Cleveland Cavaliers at the end of 1981-82 and the start of the next season.
