Suns rally past Celtics

Phoenix overcomes 29-point deficit in 110-106 win

? The Phoenix Suns trailed by 29 points and their best big man, Amare Stoudemire, had already limped off of the court.

It turns out, that was the perfect combination for a comeback.

Stephon Marbury hit consecutive three-pointers in the final three minutes to cap a 29-point comeback — the largest in Suns history — in a 110-106 victory over the Boston Celtics Friday night.

“We just came out and played with a totally different purpose,” Marbury said. “We weren’t just playing to win, but for pride.”

Marbury scored 21 of his 34 points in the second half after Boston took a 65-36 lead with the first basket of the third quarter. Phoenix’s largest previous comeback was 27 points at Dallas March 2, 1997.

“I’ve never been a part of a loss like this. This is a first for me,” Celtics forward Vin Baker said. “It was difficult, being a part of it and not being able to stop the bleeding.”

Playing with a smaller lineup by necessity, the Suns outscored the Celtics 36-17 in the third period to cut the deficit to seven points, then tied it 88-88 on Marbury’s layup with 6:19 left.

Phoenix was up five points before Mike James and Paul Pierce hit consecutive three-pointers to give Boston a 94-93 lead with 4:05 left. After Baker hit a jumper from the left side for a 96-95 lead, Marbury hit one three-pointer and then another.

Phoenix never trailed again.

Stephon Marbury of Phoenix (3) scores against Boston's Kedrick Brown. Marbury led the Suns past the Celtics, 110-106, Friday night in Boston.

Pierce hit a three-pointer and James made two free throws to cut the deficit to 107-106 with 10.8 seconds left. But Marbury sank two free throws, and then forced James into an off-balance, well-guarded three-pointer with four seconds left. Joe Johnson made a free throw with 1.3 seconds left to ice it.

Stoudemire had to be helped off the court after spraining his left ankle with 3:20 left in the second quarter when he landed on Pierce’s foot under the Suns’ basket. He was taken for X-rays and did not return; last season’s rookie of the year, Stoudemire had five points and six rebounds in the game.

Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak and won on the road for just the second time this season.

The teams went to overtime in their fourth straight meeting, and the Timberwolves’ trio of Garnett, Sprewell and Sam Cassell was just good enough to end the Kings’ 10-game winning streak.

Garnett had 33 points, a career-high 25 rebounds and six assists, while Sprewell scored a season-high 37 points despite going scoreless in the final 8:55 of regulation. Cassell added 26 points as the Timberwolves handed Sacramento its first home loss of the season.

Grizzlies 92, Wizards 77

Memphis, Tenn. — Pau Gasol had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and newcomer Bonzi Wells’ 12 points and six assists highlighted Memphis’ victory over Washington. Wells, acquired Wednesday from Portland, received a standing ovation when he entered the game early in the first quarter. He had three assists in his first two minutes, two of them leading to dunks, and shot 6-for-13 in 27 minutes as Memphis won its fourth straight.

James Posey added 15 points for Memphis, while Mike Miller finished with 13 and Shane Battier 10.

Christian Laettner led Washington with 17 points, shooting 7-of-10, while Larry Hughes added 15. Steve Blake had 12 and Juan Dixon scored 11, the two leading what little comeback the Wizards could muster in the fourth quarter.

Memphis led 50-30 at the half thanks mostly to lackluster, sloppy play by the Wizards. Missing their first eight shots was bad enough, but Washington’s 13 first-half turnovers made it worse.

76ers 93, Heat 90

Miami — Allen Iverson scored 35 points and Philadelphia withstood a second-half comeback to defeat Miami. The Heat fell behind by 19 points with three minutes left in the third period before they rallied. Miami missed three three-pointers down the stretch that would have tied the game, including a 24-footer by Lamar Odom with two seconds to go.

Iverson missed 16 of 23 shots but went 16-for-17 from the line and scored the game’s final points on a basket with 21 seconds left. The NBA scoring leader is averaging 38.8 points in his past four games.

The 76ers won for the second time in as many nights to climb above .500. They snapped a three-game road losing streak and beat the Heat for the sixth time in a row.

Miami’s Eddie Jones missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game with 2:50 left, and another with 43 seconds to go. The Heat’s Brian Grant rebounded the second miss and scored to cut the 76ers’ lead to 91-90.

Iverson’s 18-footer made it 93-90.

Raptors 92, Hawks 87

Toronto — Jalen Rose had 22 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, and Vince Carter also scored 22 in Toronto’s third straight victory. Donyell Marshall added 21 points for the Raptors, who are 3-0 since acquiring Rose, Marshall and Lonny Baxter from Chicago. Carter, in foul trouble throughout the game, had 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Jason Terry had 19 points for the Hawks, who have lost three straight and five of six. Terry’s jumper over Chris Bosh gave Atlanta an 82-81 lead with 1:52 left

Marshall followed with a three-pointer before Theo Ratliff tied it with a 12-foot jumper. Stephen Jackson made one of two free throws to give Atlanta a one-point lead, but Carter made two free throws with 40 seconds left to put Toronto ahead for good.

After Terry missed a long jumper from the top of the key, Carter grabbed the rebound and made two more free throws, giving Toronto an 88-85 lead with 24 seconds left.

Atlanta’s Boris Diaw missed a three-pointer, and Rose made four free throws in the final 15 seconds to clinch the win.

Nets 93, Bucks 86

East Rutherford, N.J. — Kenyon Martin had 20 points and matched his career-high with 21 rebounds, helping New Jersey Nets snap a four-game losing streak. Playing before a crowd of about 3,000 because of a snowstorm, Jason Kidd added 16 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his 54th career triple-double to help the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions (8-11) take a little pressure off coach Byron Scott.

Kerry Kittles added 22 points and Richard Jefferson had 18 for New Jersey, which won for only the third time in nine home games.

Michael Redd had 24 points and Desmond Mason added 19 for the Bucks, who played without Toni Kukoc (back spasms) and Tim Thomas (ankle).

Martin thrilled the small crowd with a dunking exhibition. Five of his baskets were on slams, including four in a 22-10 spurt that gave New Jersey a six-point halftime lead. Thirteen of his rebounds were on the defensive end.

The Nets appeared to break the game open with a 13-2 spurt that gave them a 59-42 lead early in the third quarter. But Redd pulled the Bucks to 90-84 on a jumper with 1:16 to go.

Kidd put the game away with a three-pointer with 19 seconds to play. The triple-double was his fourth of the season. No other NBA player has more than one triple-double this season.
