Kracl scores 35 to propel Eudora girls to win

EHS boys' coach not satisfied, but Cardinals sweep Pleasant Ridge in season-opening doubleheader

? Despite a new season and a new building, the Eudora High girls basketball team went back to an old formula to pick up its opening win: Give the ball to Lauren Kracl.

The senior poured in 35 points Friday night as the Cardinals christened the court at the school’s new gym with a 60-47 victory over Pleasant Ridge.

At times it seemed Kracl could score at will. At halftime she had as many points (17) as Pleasant Ridge’s team and frequently led the Rams by a point or two midway in the third quarter. But Kracl wasn’t aware of her numbers.

“I can’t score without my teammates’ good passes,” Kracl said. “I was on tonight. Somebody else will be on another night.”

One of the Cardinals feeding her passes was her freshman sister, Erin, who started alongside Lauren for Eudora (1-0) and finished with six points.

“I love it,” Lauren said about being on the court with Erin. “I give her a hard time, but she’s a good player. We play well together. We know where each other are on the court.”

After trailing 32-17 at halftime, the Rams (0-1) outscored Eudora, 21-12, in the fourth quarter with timely shooting led by Molly Gwartney, who scored nine of her 18 points in the quarter.

Eudora won, but it was hard to tell after chatting with Cardinal coach Scott Stein.

“I was very disappointed offensively. I thought we rushed things,” Stein said. “To me the difference in the game is that we played defense in the second half.”

Did they ever. The Rams’ only points in the third quarter came off two free throws in the final seconds.

Pleasant Ridge (0-1) was up 29-25 at halftime, but its two main scoring options, Chris Barnes and Brad Heim, were shut down by Mark Abel and Jesse Montgomery. Abel came off the bench and kept Heim scoreless in the second half and also hit two big three-pointers to pump up the crowd.

“It was a better atmosphere than the old gym,” said guard Tyler Cleveland, who led EHS with 12 points. “It’s real loud. Everybody’s right there.”
