FCE and 4-H news

The Vinland Family Community Education Unit will meet at noon Tuesday at the home of Lola Ford. The club will have a covered-dish luncheon and gift exchange. Members will answer roll call by giving a helpful hint.

  • The Kanwaka Family Community Education Unit will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the home of Don and Margaret Fuston. The club will have a potluck lunch and gift exchange. Members are urged to bring gifts for the First Step House.
  • The India Family Community Education Unit will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass. The club will have a gift exchange. Members also are asked to bring a teddy bear.
  • The Eudora 4-H Club had its 50th anniversary celebration Nov. 22. The event was attended by both past and present 4-H members. There was a slide show highlighting the past 50 years. Several Eudora businesses contributed to the celebration by donating prizes for the raffle that took place.

A dinner and reception were given.

Club officers attended the countywide officer training Nov. 20 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Members focused on leadership skills and teamwork.

The Bromelsick Christmas party for 4-H’ers and Scouts will be Dec. 20.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 5 at St. Paul United Church of Christ.

  • The Stull Busy Beavers met Nov. 10 at the Douglas County Extension Office.

The meeting was conducted by the parents of officers for Parents Night.

Chris Lesser led the meeting, and Fred Gantz took notes.

Pins were passed out to those who filled out applications and met the criteria, and leaders were recognized for their years of service. The club also received a purple seal for its accomplishments during the past year.

As a community service project the club will adopt the 389th Unit stationed in Baghdad. It will be sending items such as snacks, game books, magazines, eye drops and hand sanitizer to 60 soldiers. Members are encouraged to write a note or a letter to send along with the care packages.

A slide show was presented by a group of 4-Hers who were able to attend Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington, D.C., this past summer. Trudi Rice, extension director, talked about how much 4-H has changed. Kim Davis, county 4-H agent, encouraged members to make the most of 4-H.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Stull Church. Members are to bring items they have collected for care packages.

  • The Douglas County 4-H Horse Project met Nov. 18 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

New officers were elected. They are Connor Nottingham, president; MaKenzie Flory, vice president; Mason Durkes, recording secretary; Braxton Nottingham, treasurer; Wyatt Schumann, reporter; Amy Andrews, parliamentarian; Katelyn Reese, corresponding secretary; Paris Nottingham, junior president; and Samantha Mathews, junior vice president.

The ground work for Level 1 Testing was demonstrated. Registration for the state 4-H Horse Panorama is due to the extension office Dec. 15. The club will meet Dec. 16 at the fairgrounds. Open ride will begin at 5 p.m. The next business meeting will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 20.

  • The Vinland Valley 4-H Club met Nov. 3 at Vinland Elementary School. The club answered roll call by naming their favorite Thanksgiving food. New officers were installed. They are Amy Stone, president; Krystal Bateson, vice president; Zoey Fife, recording secretary; Bailey Brown, corresponding secretary; Spencer Wilson, treasurer; Lacey Hunsinger, reporter; Jennifer Tuley, parliamentarian; Brittany George and Christopher Brown, song leaders; Ben Smart and David Tuley, recreation leaders; and David Bateson and Annie Smart, historians.
  • The Four Leaf Clover 4-H Club met Nov. 10 in Building 1 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Before the meeting, members enjoyed a Thanksgiving-style dinner. The new officers were installed. Achievement, membership and leadership pins were distributed. Tennery Carttar, Jessica Gibler, Kate McCurdy, Morgan Nilhas, Jerry Sakumura, Brogan Scott and Calihan Scott joined the club.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday.
