Calvary Temple Assembly of God

An All-Family Night Potluck for Calvary Temple Assembly of God members will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the home of Ralph and Susie Bullock.

September is Heritage Month at the church, and the congregation plans to recognize and observe the backgrounds of Christians from around the world.

Members will wear special clothing and display different items each Sunday at the church.

Centenary United Methodist Church

A course on the Harry Potter book series and its relationship to mainstream Christianity will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays in September at Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St.

The course, which is open to the community, is appropriate for people of all ages and denominations.

Participants will cover the entire Harry Potter series, with particular attention paid to the fifth book, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”

First Christian Church

A topical Sunday school class for adults is offered each weekend at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

The Faith & Life Series subject for this weekend is “Faith & An Artist’s Journey,” co-led by Suzanne Hiersche and Dr. Glenn Robertson.

First United Methodist Church

A course on how to become a “Love and Logic Parent,” helping people find specific answers and actions for difficult moments in child rearing, is offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in September at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Cost is $25 per family.

The church’s toddlers, preschoolers and kindergartners graduate Sunday. The new rotation of classes for children, “Cool Bible Stuff,” begins Sept. 7 and runs through Oct. 12.

Knights of Columbus

Knights of Columbus Council 1372 has announced the recipient of the First Annual James Hill Memorial Scholarship.

Matt Lane, a Free State High School graduate who will attend Kansas State University this fall, received the scholarship from Bridgie Hill, who is James Hill’s widow.

Hill was a member of Lawrence Council 1372 for 25 years. He was the Grand Knight from 1955 to 1964. He died in 1973.

Ninth Street Baptist Church

Ninth Street Baptist Church, 847 Ohio, will celebrate its 140th anniversary at 7:45 a.m. Sunday worship with special guests, the Rev. Desmond Lamb and Forest Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Kansas City, Kan.

The community is welcome to attend.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Fall programs for all ages, as well as rehearsals for the children’s and bell choirs, begin Sept. 7 at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

Rainbow Journey, an innovative Sunday school program for elementary students, also starts on that date.

Adult education classes meet before the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. worship services.

The church sanctuary will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 11 — the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. — for quiet prayer and reflection.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

Barbara LeClerq, a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave., is serving as a volunteer in a Lutheran Hour Ministries “Servants to the Nations” project to assist the Lutherans of Bethlehem in the West Bank.

Christmas Lutheran Church and School will be dedicating their Dar Al-Kalima (House of the Book) Community Center and medical clinic.

LeClerq and a team of 10 volunteers will help ready the facilities and observe life in the West Bank for two to four weeks.

Redeemer Lutheran’s annual ice cream social is 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at the church.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Enrollment for religious education classes was last week at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

The church’s annual Oktoberfest will be Oct. 4. A polka mass will start at 4:30 p.m. Dinner will be served starting at 4:30 p.m., and dancing will continue until 10 p.m.

The annual event planning meeting for the Parish Activities Committee will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 in the church hall.

Hearing-assistance receivers are available at all Masses. Ask a hospitality minister for either a headphone or earphone.

The faith group ReMembering Church will resume its regular schedule of meeting at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month in the Padre Pio Chapel in the church’s north entrance.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

Seven new Christians will be welcomed Sunday to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Eila Grace Deavours, Jackson Robert McMillan and Brady Thomas Lemon will be baptized at the 9 a.m. service.

Margaret Worley, Jacqueline Tippett and Ethan Judd Irons will be baptized at the 10:45 a.m. service.

Jerad Hall will be baptized at the 5:30 p.m. service.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Sara Holmberg will play several selections by Bach at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

“St. Benedict on the Freeway” is the title of Sunday’s adult forum, led by Ruth Turney. It begins at 9:30 a.m. in the parish hall.

Forty Good Minutes will continue its discussion of Genesis and creation with a view of creation stories from non-Christian traditions. The group meets at 9:30 a.m. in the Matthews Center.

Worden United Methodist Church

A new children’s ministry for those in kindergarten up to the fifth grade will begin Wednesday at Worden United Methodist Church.

The ministry, called “Faith Weavers,” will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This is a non-denominational program open to the community.
