SFT grads to play at Utah

Talk about a golden opportunity.

Little did Santa Fe Trail High graduates Travis Kohn and Shane Miles know when they signed to play baseball at Cloud County Community College it would propel them to the next level in months, instead of the traditional two years.

When Cloud County CC coach Bryan Conger accepted a job recently as pitching coach at Utah, he encouraged Kohn and Miles to go with him to Salt Lake City.

Miles, a catcher, and Kohn, a pitcher, helped Santa Fe Trail to a 19-4 record last spring. Miles also was a standout in football, and received interest from Kansas State in both sports.

“I went out there and visited Monday and Tuesday,” Miles said. “It’s definitely what I wanted.”

Kohn, who wowed scouts with a fastball that has peaked at 91 mph, decided to go along, too.

“It’s certainly going to be an adjustment,” Santa Fe Trail coach Dave Watkins said. “That’s a major step from high school to D-I. I think both of them are going to be able to contribute.”
